Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the University of Pennsylvania claiming that a police officer fired a Taser at 52-year-old Ronald Harmon and caused the injury that killed him.

According to Crump, Harmon died from a head injury he sustained while getting hit with a Taser on Nov. 5, 2024. The attorney also said that the Taser was wrongfully deployed in the encounter.

“We know that Ronald Harmon was not a threat to police at the time, he was running away,” Crump said at a press conference on Monday. “They violated their own policies when they Tased him from behind.”

In a statement to NBC10, the University of Pennsylvania Division of Public Safety said: “We extend our sincere condolences to the Harmon family for their tragic loss. We have recently become aware of the lawsuit and we do not have further comment on pending litigation.”

Crump filed the case in federal court and listed the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and University of Pennsylvania Police Department personnel as defendants.
